FUNCTION and REMIT of the BIG 18 committees

The remit of the NHSBSP Radiology Quality Assurance Coordinating Committee (Big 18) is to ensure that the quality of care provided in the NHSBSP is satisfactory as measured against national quality assurance minimum standards and current professional practice and knowledge. The committee reviews the standards that radiologists working in screening should reasonably be expected to achieve, examines relevant data to assess screening radiology performance and makes recommendations when changes in standards and radiological practice in the NHSBSP are required.

The committee consists of the Director of the NHS Cancer Screening Programme, a representative from each of the English regions plus Scotland, Wales, N Ireland, S Ireland and Jersey and representative/s from the national breast screening training centres, the cancer screening evaluation unit, the national imaging board, the equipment sub-group, breast clinicians and the Royal College of Radiologists Breast Group. Representatives from other groups may be co-opted when necessary.
