Increased Risk of Breast Cancer following Radiotherapy for Hodgkin’s Disease:
Breast Surveillance Evaluation

Notification of all women who satisfy the criteria for inclusion in this exercise to inform patients of their increased risk of breast cancer following supra-diaphragmatic radiotherapy for Hodgkin’s disease, should have been completed by January 2004 at the latest.

The Cancer Screening Evaluation Unit has been asked to collect the data on breast surveillance in these women. Professor Tony Swerdlow is collecting data on the notification exercise, including case notes from the initial consultation and consent forms.

Once relevant case notes and consent forms have been processed we will contact you with a list of women who may have been screened at your centre and request data on each screen from the beginning of this initiative, which was from November 2003 or from when the woman first attended. We will only request data from women who have consented to be part of this study

The forms for recording information on breast surveillance in these women, and in any women referred for surveillance as part of this exercise whom you know of but not identified on our list, are shown below.

Recording the data:

For women with a normal outcome we only need data on her name, current address (if available) date of birth, NHS number, the name of her examining radiologist and place of screening, the mammographic pattern of her breasts and the date of attendance. Whilst we have designed a form for data entry, you may find it more convenient to enter this on an excel spreadsheet, or send photocopies of reports with normal outcomes instead.

For women with abnormal findings and who have gone onto further procedures, we ask for all the data to be entered on a form designed specifically for the purpose, a copy of which is shown below. We have received considerable help in the design of this form from consultant radiologists participating in this initiative and are confident that collection of these criteria will be of value in future analyses.

For non-attenders, we also want to know the date of invitation if she was invited but failed to attend.
