Requests for Assitance

At the request of the Executive - a posting requesting old mammo equipment for Sierra Leone.

"This lady is setting up a breast screening centre in Freetown Sierra Leone in honour of her late sister who died of cancer. I had a chat with her on the phone. They are looking for a donated mammogram machine or one they could get at a subsidised price. I thought their story is quite moving. I wonder if you know of any one or any organisation that may offer this assistance."

Trustee MEPS Ltd and Project director WWC

The Well Woman Clinic is a community based project which was launched in March 2006 by the minister of health and sanitation to assist in reducing the incidence of death from cancer and also to reduce the burden of suffering among cancer patients and their families. The project is the first initiative of the MEPS Trust ltd which is a trust set up by our aunt Melvine Edith Patricia Stuart before she died from a ten year battle with cancer. She particularly wanted us to set up a convalescent home but because of the increasing incidence of cancer among wome, more so after the war, and the lack of facilities to alleviate this problem, the trustees felt that a cancer clinic in the first instance was more appropriate. This also was componded by the death from breast cancer of our sister and cousin, Valerie at the age of 50 years. She lost her battle after two years. Valerie was a High court judge who did not know about the advantages of early detection. The clinic targets the promotion of good health among women as a means of preventing this disease and also the screening for breast cancer by clinical breast examination and by teaching women self breast examination for early detection.

We would llike to develop further by introducing screening by mammogram and ultrasound as we believe the cancer could be detected much earlier by this method.

We hope you will be in a position to render us some assistance and we look forward to hearing from you in due course.
